3月10日，美国科技媒体The Verge报道称，根据对孙宇晨公司多位前员工的调查，获悉孙宇晨在波场期间涉嫌内幕交易，还曾在Poloniex期间涉嫌欺诈、洗钱，目前美国国税局、FBI等已介入调查，孙宇晨可能利用其他国家公民身份逃避法律制裁。

2017年9月4日，中国央行等七部委联合发布《关于防范代币发行融资风险的公告》，全面叫停各类虚拟货币发行，并且要求已发行虚拟货币做清退安排。

在此基础上，孙宇晨还曾通过变换自己的公民身份以及在世界各地开设大量银行账户的方式逃避政府监管。报道称，其曾用100万美元的投资换取了马耳他国的公民身份，还曾在法庭上称自己是加勒比群岛圣基茨和尼维斯的公民。仅在美国，孙宇晨就有13个银行账户，在马耳他还有8个账户。一位孙宇晨公司的前雇员称：“他认为税收很愚蠢。”
