据比特币中国相关负责人介绍，这台ATM于2014年初引入上海，制造商是冰岛的Lamassu公司，可以算是中国大陆第一台比特币ATM。当时，这台浑身雪白的机器被放置在张江的一家咖啡馆内，很多国内外比特币玩家慕名前往尝鲜。在那个阶段，比特币中国的工作人员要不定期前往维护，比如现金放满了要去收回，比特币不够了要去充满。
According to the relevant director of Bitcoin, the ATM was introduced to Shanghai in early 2014, and the manufacturer, Lamassu of Iceland, was the first Bitcoin ATM in mainland China. 与传统ATM的大型体积不同，这台机器可谓小而精致。从原理上看，这台ATM背后与一台服务器联网，服务器会根据全球几大交易所的价格，加上一些加权算法，实时计算出比特币的当前价格，显示在ATM的屏幕上供交易者参考。交易者只要按下ATM屏幕上的“START”键，然后在信息读取区域扫描自己比特币钱包地址的二维码，插入现钞，就可以换取相应金额的比特币了。当然，也会收取相应比例的手续费。不过，在这台比特币ATM上，并没有实现反向操作的功能，也就是充入比特币提取现钞。
Unlike the large size of the traditional ATM, the machine is small and sophisticated. By principle, the ATM is connected to a server that calculates the current price of Bitcoin in real time, based on the prices of several major global exchanges, with some weighting algorithms, and displays it on the ATM screen for the information of traders. Dealers simply press the “START” key on the ATM screen and then scan the two-dimensional code of their bitcoin wallet address in the information reading area and insert the current currency in exchange for the corresponding amount of bitcoins.

通过coinatmradar.com（加密货币ATM雷达）网站可以看到，美国有1805台比特币ATM，英国有119台比特币ATM，而整个中国大陆只在上海有上述那么一台比特币ATM。不过，自从中国监管层叫停比特币交易后，比特币中国就主动停止了相关维护工作，这台ATM也就名存实亡了。可以看到，机器目前屏幕已经显示，机器中没有任何比特币可供提取了。而coinatmradar.com上的信息也声称，这台ATM“可能不工作了”。比特币中国相关负责人表示，把这台机器放在前台，更多只是一种纪念意义。

不过，记者在香港的街头倒是发现了几台正常运转中的虚拟货币ATM，短时间内就有三四波人前来兑换，以外国人居多。实际上，这三台机器分别是比特币、以太坊和比特币现金的ATM，制造商是General Bytes。原理与上海的这台也大致相同，根据指引，用户拿出手机钱包扫码，放入相应的港币，即可收到相应的比特币。

从coinatmradar.com上可以发现，虽然比特币ATM的供应商在全世界有79家之多（提供比特币单向交易的56家，提供比特币现钞双向交易的26家），但美国的Genesis Coin、捷克的General Bytes和冰岛的Lamassu三家公司制造的比特币ATM基本占据了市场的大部分份额。但随着各国监管的驱严，这一产业的未来前景也变得不再明朗。
